Master Thesis “Privacy-Friendly Digital Health Credentials / Privacy-Preserving Cryptography”
- Center for Digital Safety & Security -
The COVID-19 pandemic required the rapid design, development, and deployment of digital health certificates (aka “green pass”) in all European countries. This tool can be used to control the access to specific areas while reducing the overall risk for individuals.
The most widespread technological basis is the EU Digital COVID Certificates (EUDCC) project. Unfortunately, it is not designed with user privacy in mind. Such a credential, when shown, always reveals all the information encoded in the person’s health credential.
It would however be sufficient to demonstrate that certain predicates over these mostly sensitive data are satisfied, e.g., a person has received a vaccination within the last 6 months. This can be achieved by relying on privacy-preserving cryptography, i.e., attribute-based anonymous credentials.
The focus of this master thesis is on design and implementation aspects of a privacy-friendly version of digital health credentials.
You will interact with our team of experienced cryptographers to understand the cryptographic needs and tools required for privacy-friendly digital health credentials.
You will familiarize yourself with the concept behind digital health credentials and the EUDCC framework.
You will evaluate and experiment with open-source libraries for anonymous credentials.
Under the guidance of our team, you will be involved in the design and development of a privacy-friendly version of digital health credentials.
You are expanding your know-how in the field of Cryptography and Privacy-Preserving Technologies.
You get an insight into applied research and have the possibility to work together in a scientific community.
You will have not only the opportunity to discuss your work experiences and results with experienced scientific peers, but also to connect with other bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD students.
Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner:
Ongoing master’s studies in the field of: Computer Science, Mathematics, or similar
Good knowledge of a programming language (e.g.: C/C++, Java, Rust, Python) and software development
Knowledge of cryptography and information security (at least one introductory course)
Interest in the implementation of research-related cryptographic methods and their practical use
Ability to communicate and work in a team
Good verbal and written English or German skills
What to expect:
EUR 889,90 gross per month for 20 hours/week based on the collective agreement. There will be additional company benefits. You will be part of our international Young AIT network. As a research institution, we are familiar with the supervision and execution of master theses, and we are looking forward to supporting you accordingly
At AIT, the promotion of women is important to us - that's why we are especially looking forward to applications from female students!
