University Assistant (prae doc)
at the Department of History
to 30.06.2027.

Digital Humanities is a professorship established in 2016 at the Department of History at the University of Vienna, led by Prof. Dr Tara Andrews. Together with the university’s Data Science Network, we have been closely involved in the founding of the innovative set of masters’ programmes in Digital Humanities, Data Science, and Business Analytics. Our group’s research focuses on the ways in which digital tools and methods can be used to support and advance historical research. As a pre-doctoral University Assistant, you will have the chance to work in a cutting-edge and dynamic environment, breaking new ground in humanities methodology for historical research, and passing on these methods and skills to students in the classroom.
The employment relationship is initially limited to 1.5 years and is automatically extended to a total of 4 years, unless the employer submits a declaration of non-renewal after a maximum of 12 months.
Duration of employment: 4 year/s
Extent of Employment: 30 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.
Job Description:
Independent delivery of teaching offerings (1.5–3 SWS depending on salary grade); participation in research, teaching-related and administrative tasks; (inter)national publication and presentation activities; contribution to organisation of conferences, meetings and other external activities; student support and examination activities. The conclusion of a dissertation agreement in the field of Digital Humanities is expected within 12–18 months.
Profile:
Master’s degree in a field related to the study of the Middle Ages anywhere in the world; experience with the collection and analysis of digital data for historical research;
good IT skills, for example one or more of the following:
Experience with programming for the humanities (Python, R, or Javascript),
Experience collecting and modelling data about historical persons,Experience with Web publication or data visualization;
intention to complete a Ph.D. project relevant to the field of Digital Humanities and within the supervision capacities of the University Professor of Digital Humanities; excellent spoken and written English skills (knowledge of German is also a significant advantage); ability to work well with a team both local and remote.
