University Assistant (prae doc)
at the Department of Geography and Regional Research

Reference number : 14207

Founded in 1885 the Department of Geography and Regional Research (IfGR) is the oldest and largest geography department in Austria. It is home to more than 80 researchers and non-academic staff in eight working groups, as well as more than 3,000 students. Since its foundation, it has continuously expanded into new fields for teaching and research within both human and physical geography. This interdisciplinary basis in social and natural sciences provides a dynamic and inspiring environment for researchers to address critical societal challenges of our generation.

The position is assigned to the Urban Studies Working Group. The Group pursues research on the complexity and interactions of social, ecological and technical processes as well as their impacts on the urban system. The Group works both conceptually-theoretically and empirically on urban sustainability transformations and city-specific challenges with the overall aim of contributing to urban sustainability transformations in Europe and Latin America.

We offer a PhD position in an inspiring inter- and transdisciplinary research environment embedded in the working group’s Urban Sustainability Living Lab with the opportunity to become a part of the Vienna International School of Earth and Space Sciences at the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy.

The employment relationship is initially limited to 1.5 years and automatically extended to a total of 4 years, unless the employer submits a declaration of nonrenewal after a maximum of 12 months.

Duration of employment: 4 year/s

Extent of Employment: 30 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Job Description:

- Development and completion of a paper-based dissertation on an innovative topic related to urban sustainability transformations

Signing a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 months
Participation in teaching activities of the working group as well as independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement, including supervision of students
Participation in scientific studies, research projects, publications and other academic activities of the working groupParticipation in the preparation of research proposals and the acquisition of third-party fundingContributing to 4CITIES master program agendas, taking on coordination tasks (e.g. Spring School organization, science communication)Administrative responsibilities and science communication
Involvement in the organization of workshops, conferences, etc.

Profile:

- University Master degree in Geography, Urban Studies, Environmental Sciences, Sustainable Development, or related fields
Interdisciplinary background in urban studies with the ability to address interrelated urban challenges and processes, and to link theory with empiricism and practiceProfound knowledge in the implementation of qualitative research methods, good knowledge in quantitative methods; experience in statistics and GIS are an assetStrong interest in conducting transdisciplinary researchExperience in conducting empirical research (e.g. in the course of the Master thesis)Excellent command of written and spoken English, working knowledge of German is required or to be acquired, additional languages are an asset
