The University of Vienna plans to expand the existing Research Data Management services by offering discipline-specific support through a new Data Stewardship program. The Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies is therefore looking for a highly motivated person (m/f/d) with professional experience in the field of history, archaeology, and/or culture studies or a related discipline for the position of Data Steward. This position is temporary for a period of 3 years. The position may be extended if there are adequate funds available.

Your personal sphere of influence:
As a Data Steward at the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies, you will support researchers in the sustainable handling of research data and the development of strategies for discipline-specific and cross-disciplinary Research Data Management that complies with the FAIR principles and makes data findable, accessible, interoperable and re-usable. You will work at the intersection between research and research infrastructure. Together with researchers, the responsible coordinators within the faculty (Senior Scientist DH, head of IT & digitization), experts from the University research support services, the Data Stewardship Coordinator at the University Library as well as Data Stewards from other faculties, you will further develop the Research Data Management at the University. You can expect a diverse and forward-looking work environment.

Your future tasks:

Providing advice and support to researchers in the area of Research Data Management and Open Science, in particular assisting them in writing and implementing data management plans
Designing and developing innovative discipline-specific services in the area of Research Data Management (e.g. discipline-specific data handling and support in the programming of interfaces)
Building awareness for sustainable Research Data Management and collaborating in the development of strategies for data sustainability, including software, applications and databases developed during the course of research projects
Developing workflows, policies and standards for Research Data Management and digital research matters at large
Designing and delivering needs-based training on Research Data Management, Open Science, and digital research matters at large
Conducting needs assessments among the faculty, and generating structured reports
Networking in university, national and international initiatives (Clariah.at, DHInfra and Research Data Alliance, among others)

Your Profile:

Master’s degree or a Diploma in one of the disciplines which will be supported, resp. in the field of Digital Humanities
Interest or experience in the area of Research Data Management and Open Science as well as Digital Humanities
Good knowledge of research practice, as well as a broad understanding of how research operates and how data and software underpin reproducible research
Knowledge of the following languages which can also be acquired in the context of the foreseen additional training: PHP, HTML, MySQL, Javascript, Python
Unnderstanding of XML-based and semantic-web technologies which can also be acquired in the context of the foreseen additional training
Experience with designing and delivering training
Very good command of written and spoken English
Very good command of written and spoken German or a willingness to acquire it
Willingness to learn, in particular to attend the University of Vienna’s certificate course “Data Steward”
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Creativity and innovative spirit
Service orientation, ability to work under pressure and flexibility
Independent, accurate and systematic way of working
Ability to work in a team
