Your Role and Responsibilities
The Instana Java Tracer team is looking for a Senior Backend Software Engineer to join our team in Böblingen. As a member of the Java tracer team, you will be working in our Observability platform, Instana. At Instana, we process and analyze millions of spans, traces, metrics and events per second in order to provide actionable APM intelligence to our rapidly expanding customer base. Team Java is responsible for Instana's APM capability of JVM applications. Metrics, Traces, Logs and Profiles for JVM applications will be taken care by the team. If you have a natural curiosity for digging deep into JVM, you will be a good fit for our team as the job will require you to understand how Java technologies and frameworks work behind the screen.
Your Role and Responsibilities
As a member of Team Java you responsibilities will include:

Work with Product Manager for new features and for providing tracing support for new Java/Kotlin/Scala frameworks and cloud support
Maintain and evolve the core infrastructure
Debug issues reported by our customers
Be informed about new JDK features and their implications for Instana and collaborate with the team to find solutions
Collaborate with other tracer teams for cross-team initiatives
Support Junior engineers when needed
Improve developer environment with tools and pipelines

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

5+ years of professional experience programming Java
Good code writing discipline and an eye for code efficiency
Strong analytical and problem solving thinking
JDK 11, Spring framework
Maven, Github
JVM internals
JVM profiling skills (JFR, JProfiler)
Understanding of agile methodologies e.g. Kanban
Fluent in written and spoken English
Permission to work in the EU
Relevant experience or educational background in Software Engineering required

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

Experience in distributed tracing
C++
Kotlin, Scala
Project Reactor, Netty
Application servers like Weblogic, Websphere
Bash/python for tooling
