The Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (wiiw) is an independent research institute in the field of applied economic research focussing on Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe. The institute has been operating successfully for over 50 years and enjoys an excellent international reputation. We offer our clients and stakeholders economic studies, forecasts and economic data. To strengthen our statistics department, we are currently looking for an Economic Data Specialist. Main Tasks
Research in national and international databases
Data preparation, calculations, support for economists in analysing data on a wide range of economic topics
To update and expand the institute's internal macroeconomic databases
To evaluate and analyse methodological comparability in data work
To develop, maintain and present visualisations of macroeconomic data using tables, charts, infographics and dashboards
Database management with a focus on quality control, methodological consistency checks and documentation of processing procedures
Requirements
A degree in the field of economics or related
Sound understanding of economic concepts and strong interest in analysing macroeconomic indicators
Experience in data analysis, graphical visualisation or data science, especially in dealing with data pipelines, data cleansing and quality control
Experience with version control (git) is an advantage
Precision in working methods with a strong detective-analytical understanding for uncovering and investigating correlations
Advanced skills in programming with R (including R Shiny) or Python and familiarity with their common visualisation libraries (ggplot2, seaborn) are required, as well as a willingness and commitment to continuous learning, with a particular focus on expanding R skills.
Experience with APIs, web scraping and JavaScript are an advantage
MS Office skills with a focus on Excel
Diligence and a structured way of working as well as the willingness to familiarise yourself with complex content
Willingness to document the work carried out
Excellent knowledge of English; knowledge of an Eastern European language is an advantage
High level of competence in team-based collaboration

Closing date for applications: 30th April 2024 Start: as soon as possible – ideally in June 2024
Initially, the contract will be for a fixed term of 18 months, but the appointment could be made permanent (subject to a satisfactory probationary period). Monthly remuneration (14 times per year) for a 40-hour week will be € 3.578,80 gross or above, depending on qualifications and experience.
